How to cut porcelain tiles without chipping

Why porcelain chips and when to choose manual cutter, wet saw, diamond blade, support and edge finishing.

Quick answer

Porcelain chips when the blade/wheel is wrong, the tile is unsupported, the feed is rushed, the cutter is too small or the edge is highly visible. Wet cutting and a porcelain-rated blade often help.

Typical example

Large outdoor porcelain, diagonal cuts and visible border pieces usually need more than a light snap cutter. Test cuts on spare pieces are part of the plan.

Checks before hire

  • Use a porcelain-rated blade or quality scoring wheel.
  • Support the full tile, especially large formats.
  • Slow the feed rate and finish edges with a rubbing pad.
  • Allow spare tiles for test cuts.

When to stop

  • Stop if every test cut chips after correct support/blade setup; the method or cutter class is wrong.
