Floor sander grit sequence: what to plan before hire
A practical grit-sequence guide for floor sanding hire, including test patches, edger discs, dust bags and avoiding skipped grits.
Quick answer
Do not hire only one grit. Most floor jobs need a planned coarse-to-medium-to-fine sequence, plus matching edger discs and dust bags. Skipping too far leaves scratches.
Typical example
A heavy old finish might start coarse, then step through intermediate grits before finish sanding. A light refresh starts finer and may not need aggressive cutting.
Checks before hire
- Buy/hire more abrasives than the exact minimum.
- Keep edger grit aligned with main sander progress.
- Empty dust bags often and keep sparks/heat risk down.
- Test a small area before doing the room.
When to stop
- Stop if nails tear abrasives, boards splinter, dust capture is missing or the floor becomes uneven quickly.
